Epoxy resin often looks much heavier than it actually is. When I first worked with epoxy resin I wasn´t sure how heavy my finished product would be and I was surprised just how light it was once I was done. Today I know that there is an easy way to calculate the approximate weight of resin before pouring it and we can use that knowledge to compare the weight of resin to other materials that you might have at home. So how heavy is resin?

Epoxy resin is not very heavy. 1 cubic foot (30,5 cm) of epoxy resin weighs around 62 pounds (28 kg) on average. In comparison, 1 cubic foot of ordinary window glass weighs around 157 pounds (71 kg) and 1 cubic foot of steel weighs around 493 pounds (223 kg).

There are different kinds of resins but all of them are on average much lighter than glass.

Resin is also, despite its compatibility lightweight, very durable, and scratch resistant.

If you want to have some examples of how much different items are made out of epoxy resin weight then consider reading on as I have a handy table where I show some examples later on.

## How to Calculate the Weight of a Resin Item

There is a simple formula to get the mass of volume. Simply multiply the density with the volume and you will get the mass of the item.

But there are some issues, different types of liquids have different densities, and calculating the volume is easy when the item is square but gets more complicated when the item is round.

You can calculate the density of resin if you can weigh it but if you can´t then you can only take an estimated value.

The density of epoxy resin is on average between 1.1 g/cm3 and 1.3 g/cm3 for regular art epoxy resin and slightly higher for more durable epoxy resin.

So I usually use a simple calculator to get an estimate of the weight of the finished epoxy item.

There is a handy calculator from Mas Epoxy that you can use to calculate the weight of an item that is cast in art resin by entering its dimensions.

Here is a list of different epoxy resin items and how much they weigh on average:

## Comparing the Weight of Glass and Resin

Resin is often used as a replacement for glass because of its transparency and its easier to work with overall. Snow globes, jewelry, miniatures, and so on are often made out of epoxy resin nowadays and not out of glass anymore. But how much less does resin weigh when compared to glass?

Epoxy resin is much lighter than glass. Epoxy resin weighs, on average, less than half as much as glass. 1 cubic foot (30,5 cm) of epoxy resin weighs 62 pounds (28 kg) on average whereas 1 cubic foot of glass weighs around 157 pounds (71 kg).

So resin is significantly lighter than glass even when we neglect the fact that different types of glass and resin also weigh differently.

## How Heavy is Resin Jewelry?

It is very hard to estimate how heavy resin is if you never held anything made out of pure resin in your own hands. One concern a lot of people have when they want to order some resin jewelry is that it might be too heavy. So how heavy is resin jewelry on average?

Resin jewelry weighs between 0.06 oz (1,7 g) for a small resin ring and 3 oz (85 g) for a big necklace. Resin weighs less than half as much as glass.
