Acrylic pouring is a blast, but let’s be honest: sometimes things don’t go according to plan. You might end up with cracks, bubbles, muddy colors, or a host of other unexpected issues. Don’t panic! Every artist faces these challenges. The key is to understand what went wrong and how to fix it.

Lumpy Paint: How to remove clumps and achieve a smooth consistency.
- Problem: Your paint mixture has small lumps or clumps.
- Cause: Insufficient mixing, using old or low-quality paint, or the pouring medium isn’t fully dissolving.
- Solution:
- Mix Longer: Increase your mixing time. Really scrape the sides and bottom of the cup to get everything incorporated.
- Strain the Paint: Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer or sieve to remove the lumps.
- Use Fresh Paint: If your paint is consistently lumpy, it might be time to replace it.
- Too Thick/Too Thin: Adjusting the mixture to achieve the perfect flow.
Paint is Too Thick:
- Problem: The paint isn’t flowing smoothly and has a consistency more like pudding than honey.
- Cause: Not enough water or pouring medium, using heavy body acrylics without enough thinning.
- Solution:
- Add More Water: Add a small amount of water (a teaspoon at a time) and mix thoroughly until you reach the desired consistency.
- Add More Pouring Medium: If water alone isn’t doing the trick, add more pouring medium. This can help improve flow and prevent cracking.
Paint is Too Thin:
- Problem: The paint is runny, watery, and lacks opacity.
- Cause: Too much water, using low-quality or heavily diluted paints.
- Solution:
- Add More Paint: Add a small amount of the original acrylic paint to thicken the mixture.
- Add More Pouring Medium (Carefully): Some pouring mediums can also add body to the paint. Use sparingly!
- Let it Sit: Allow the mixture to sit for a few minutes. Sometimes, the paint will thicken slightly as it sits.
Bubbles: Prevention and effective removal techniques.
- Problem: The paint mixture is full of tiny bubbles that won’t go away.
- Cause: Vigorous mixing, using certain types of pouring mediums, or pouring too quickly.
- Solution:
- Mix Gently: Avoid vigorous mixing. Stir slowly and deliberately.
- Let it Rest: Allow the paint mixture to sit for at least 10 minutes to allow the bubbles to rise to the surface and pop on their own.
- Use a Torch/Heat Gun: As a final step, use a torch or heat gun to quickly eliminate any remaining bubbles.
