With tufting, you can make unique pieces for your wall or as gifts for your family and friends.
I recently made five colorful masks with dangling earrings, and I’d love to share my process with you.
Materials Needed:
- Tufting frame with tufting cloth
- Tufting gun
- Yarn in various colors
- Projector (optional)
- Glue
- Scissors
- Mask and gloves
- Vacuum cleaner
- Backing cloth

Step-by-Step Process:
- Preparation:
First, I set up my frame with tufting cloth. To transfer my design to the cloth, I used a projector to display the image I wanted to create. This made it easy for me to trace the lines and mark the color areas, ensuring I wouldn’t forget which color went where. - Tufting:
Then came the fun part: tufting with my tufting gun! I took my time, being patient and redoing lines or parts that weren’t perfect. Sometimes, I even had to remove individual yarns that weren’t in the right place. It’s important to check the front of your work regularly to ensure everything looks as you imagined.

When working on details, I found it could take a lot of time, but the results were really cool. One tip I learned: don’t make dangling rug parts too slim, or they might break.

- Finishing:
Once I finished tufting, I glued the back to secure the yarn. I made sure to wear a mask and gloves during this process because the glue can be harsh on skin and lungs.

After letting everything dry for about a day, I cut the individual pieces from the frame, leaving about an inch of spare cloth around each rug. Then, I glued this excess cloth to the back of the rug for clean edges.
Next, I turned the rugs over and shaved them so that everything had the same height. In some cases, I even curved deeper parts into the rug, like around the eyes, to give it a better look.

After vacuuming away all the shaved-off yarn and cleaning the rugs, I glued a nice backing cloth on each one. Finally, I attached hanging hardware to the back so I could display them on the wall.
Remember, detailed work can be time-consuming but yields impressive results. With patience and attention to detail, you’ll create unique wall rugs that showcase your creativity and style.
And there you have it! It’s a process that requires patience and attention to detail, but the end result is so rewarding. I hope this inspires you to try tufting your own unique wall art!
