In this guide, you will learn how to make an exploding box. An exploding box can be a fantastic gift for your boyfriend, girlfriend, Mother, Father, or other loved ones. It is a simple crafting project that can be done with only some paper, a scissor, a ruler, some glue, and a pencil. So, let´s get started.

Explosion Box Supplies

Exploding box supplies. Scissors and some glue.

There are only very little supplies needed to make an exploding box.

You will need:

  • A Ruler or a scoring board (I´m using a scoring board)Amazon link
  • Some scissors
  • Superglue
  • Some 30.5 cm x 30.5 cm paperAmazon link

You can choose any color of paper that you like. I chose this very colorful paper that has different patterns on each site. But you can go with a simple colored paper whichever you prefer. The only important thing when choosing your paper is the size. It should be 30,5 cm by 30.5 cm.

You will also need some items for decorating the box for example pictures, sweets, a letter, a voucher, and similar. But more on that later.

How to Make an Explosion Box with Pictures

In this guide, I will show you how to make an exploding box with pictures and an exploding box with sweets.

Let´s start with the exploding box with pictures.

Step 1: Make the Box

First, we will make the box.

So let´s mark our paper and cut it accordingly.

Either mark the paper with a graphite pen and a ruler or with a scoring board. Either works just fine.

Mark the paper at 10 cm and 20.5 cm first.

Then rotate the paper by 90° and mark it again at 10 cm and 20.5 cm. Your paper should look similar to this now.

Then mark two more lines at 7.5 cm and 23 cm. Only mark those lines until they intersect the previously marked lines.

Rotate the paper by 90° and repeat. The paper should look like this now.

Next, cut out the squares in the corners.

And finally, cut the small squares diagonally from one corner to the other.

Fold the paper along the marked lines and you should end up with a small paper box.

Step 2: Make the Lid

Next, we will make the lid of the box.

Use a new piece of paper and start marking it at 10 cm and 20.5 cm, just like before.

Then mark the paper at 7.5 cm and 23 cm but this time mark the entire line.

Now cut out the entire inner square, like this.

Then cut and fold one side of the outer squares on opposite sites.

Finally, fold and glue the sites. You will end up with a paper lid for your exploding box.

Step 3: Decorate the Box

Finally, we will decorate the inside of the exploding box. This is always the most fun part for me!

Start by cutting a new piece of paper into three 9 cm wide strips. Mark and fold the paper strips into 3 equal sections.

Next, glue the paper strips inside the box on one of its sites. Like this:

Repeat for a second adjacent site.

Now, we will add some flaps to the paper strips. The flaps will later hold the pictures.

Simply cut a piece of paper into three 9 cm wide stripes and then cut them into equal squares.

Then fold each square over at the bottom. Like this:

And glue them along the other paper stripes inside the box. These squares will hold the pictures later

I also made two small compartments that can hold a voucher, a letter, or something similar. I made them by folding one of the squares over on all sites and then gluing them in the box on two of the walls.

Lastly, you only have to decorate the insides of the box with pictures, letters, vouchers, sweets, and similar.

And close the box up.
